COMMUNITY HELP NEEDED TO LOWER SPEED LIMIT ON LARAWAY
NEW LENOX – Hoping to prevent another tragedy along Laraway Road, state Rep. Renee Kosel was in New Lenox on June 18 to talk about House Bill 1491, which gives Will County the authority to lower the speed limit on Laraway Road.
“As you know, this road has become the scene of too many tragic and fatal car accidents, said Kosel, recalling the death of Amy D’Amico, a first-year teacher from New Lenox School District 122 who was killed while crossing Laraway Road on her way to a teacher orientation program at the Nelson Road Campus seven years ago.
“We simply cannot put the lives of our youth in jeopardy,” she added. “We need to lower the speed limit to 40 miles per hour all along Laraway Road.”
Kosel stopped by Nelson Ridge School on June 18 to talk about House Bill 1491, which was recently passed by the House and Senate and now awaits the Governor’s signature to be enacted into law. She was joined by nearly 50 school, county and village officials, including NLSD 122 Superintendent Michael Sass, Frankfort School District 157C Superintendent Robert Madonia, New Lenox Police Chief Dan Martin, Will County Sheriff Paul Kaupas, Will County Executive Larry Walsh and Will County board members Jim Moustis, Richard Brandolino and Tom Weigel.
“It’s really critical that we contact the governor and let him know how critical this issue is,” said Sen. A.J. Wilhelmi, the bill’s Chief Senate sponsor.
“If we tell him our stories, hopefully the governor will get the message,” he added.
