TERRA NOVA INFORMATION
The Terra Nova standardized achievement test is used to provide consistent,
accurate, and objective information about students’ achievement in various areas
of the curriculum. This achievement test is designed to measure a sampling of
the skills and knowledge that students are usually expected to acquire as they
progress though each grade. It serves as a basis for making inferences about
overall achievement in the area measured. Overall, the Terra Nova test gives
teachers information that can be used to address student needs, such as;
how to help individual students improve by using their existing skills and
knowledge effectively, and
how to help students develop the skills and knowledge they may be
lacking.
When the Terra Nova is administered, individual or group scores are compared
with a criterion or with the scores of other students in the class, in the school, in
the District, and in the national norm group. Test results are also used as an
indication of growth for an individual or group of students. When used in
conjunction with other measures, such as classroom observations and teachermade
assessments, a standardized achievement test can provide valuable
information about the progress of individual students and groups of students, as
well as the effectiveness of educational programs.
