1st Grade - Tyler
My name is Karen Smith and I am so excited to be at Tyler Elementary! This is my second year at Tyler teaching first grade. I have subbed and have done long term maternity leaves in previous years in NLSD 122. In addition to subbing, I have worked at Spencer Trail and Oakview as a para. Before working in NLSD 122 I taught first grade in District 161. I love being a part of the Tyler community!
I earned two degrees from Purdue University. One in Psychology and the other in Elementary Education. I also have a Master's in Reading from Governor's State University.
I love spending time with my two sons. Evan is a senior at Lincoln Way Central. Nate is a freshman at Lincoln Way Central. Both are involved in many extracurricular activities where we spend most of our evenings.
Anything Pete the Cat! He is one of my favorite characters because this groovy cat shows us that no matter what life throws our way, we can always choose to look for the good in ourselves and in every situation! Other favorite authors include Mo Willems, Eric Carle and Doreen Cronin.
I love to travel and explore new places. Some of my favorite places to visit are Michigan, Florida, Hawaii and Ireland. When I have spare time I enjoy being with my family and friends. I also enjoy reading, working out and going for a walk with my collie named Cubbie. Yes, I am a Cubs fan!
